Text and vector graphics
Digital PDFs made from text and vector shapes are often already compact. They may not shrink much, and aggressive processing can be unnecessary. If your PDF contains a scanned signature, small print, charts, or diagrams, inspect those details closely after compression.
Choosing a compression level
- Light: Best when quality matters most, such as contracts, portfolios, and documents with small text.
- Balanced: A good starting point for most emails and everyday uploads.
- Maximum: Useful when you must meet a strict file-size limit and can accept softer images.
How to check your result
Open the compressed PDF at normal reading size and look at the smallest text, signatures, photographs, and diagrams. If any important detail is difficult to read, use a lighter setting or try removing unnecessary pages instead of compressing further.
When to use a target file size
Use a target size when a form gives a specific maximum, such as 1 MB or 5 MB. Leave a small margin beneath the limit so the file is less likely to be rejected because of different size calculations.
