How to split a PDF into separate files

Sometimes you only need a few pages of a longer document, or you need to send each chapter separately. Splitting a PDF handles both.

Open the PDF splitter

1. Decide how you want it divided

Work out whether you need every page as its own file, a specific page range pulled out, or the document broken into a few multi-page sections. Knowing this before you start saves you from splitting twice.

2. Check the page numbers first

Open the PDF and note the exact page numbers you want, since a viewer's displayed page number can differ from the PDF's internal numbering if the document has a cover page or front matter.

3. Split and download the parts

Upload the PDF to Featherpress, choose your page ranges, and split it. Each resulting file downloads separately, so keep track of which piece is which as you save them.

4. Rename the files clearly

Generic names like "part1.pdf" get confusing fast. Renaming each file with its contents, such as "Contract—Signatures.pdf", makes it much easier for you and any recipient to find the right one later.

Tip: If you're splitting a document to meet a file-size limit rather than to separate content, try compressing it first — a smaller original sometimes fits without splitting at all.

Common reasons to split a PDF

Splitting is useful for pulling a signature page out of a longer contract, separating invoices that were scanned together, or sending only the relevant chapter of a manual instead of the whole book.

Before you send the pieces

Open each split file and confirm it starts and ends on the page you expected, especially if the original document had pages that weren't numbered sequentially.
